Dementia is a cruel disease. It robs the sufferer of their short term memory initially and then progresses to a disabling condition. For family members they lose the person they love whilst still physically alive.

There are measures that can be taken to help in preventing dementia.

Scientists have discovered that mutations that affect the brain involve high levels of proteins. These are called Tau Proteins and increase the likelihood of developing the disease.

Lifestyle has been proved to play a role in the chance of developing dementia. This coupled with the fact we are living longer contribute to the fact we are going to be faced with an epidemic of the condition.

Research has shown that eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, not smoking and having blood pressure and cholesterol checked regularly are all ways to help in preventing dementia.
