Introducing Paul Smith
Paul has very kindly accepted my request to become my resident dementia expert.
Paul is available for advice, help, lectures, presentations and day to day advice exclusively through Caron Cares (and my other dementia related websites which are under construction.)
Here is Paul’s career profile and I think you will agree I am really extremely fortunate to have him on board.
Paul is a highly qualified nurse consultant of 30 years who has specialised in the study and care of those living with a dementia or a related condition for the last 19 of these. He has achieved post graduate qualifications from a number of UK and overseas universities in the subjects of dementia care, dementia studies and nurse education.
He has also received qualifications in psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, clinical and indirect hypnosis, project management and is a master practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming.
He has worked across all three care sectors and has worked upwards from Enrolled Mental Nurse, Registered Mental Nurse and Community Psychiatric Nurse to senior nurse roles into management, senior management then to executive and director status.
Occupying senior management and executive positions across a number of the UK’s largest and most successful care groups Paul has studied the application of various care and financial models and provided crisis resolution, start up and service consolidation and growth leadership across seven countries. He has done so for residential, community and hospital based programs.
Latterly he has been involved in high profile service take over and rescue of the failed largest UK operator Southern Cross.
Paul has shared the experiences of thousands of patients, their families and friends and won numerous awards.
Paul has presented at national conferences and written and co-authored a number of papers and articles which have received publication in prestigious professional journals and was a lead chapter contributor on ‘change management’ to the British Medical Association book of the year 2006 ‘the new culture of activity therapy for older people’ edited by Dr. Tessa Perrin. He is author of ‘Adaptive response’ a stress reductionist approach to dementia care (2012) and is currently in the process of writing his second book for Speechmark Dementia: a biopsychosocial approach to caring.
Paul was appointed Head of Mental Health and Dementia for the UK’s newest and third largest care provider the HC-One Group
Paul has worked on DoH projects, Royal College of Nursing guidelines and is part of the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) stakeholder contributors’ pool and was a major contributor to the creation of the National Quality Care Framework dementia modules and the National Dementia Pledge and is currently a member of the NHS Institute for Excellence and Innovation.
He has provided consultation and intellectual capacity to the development of a number of telehealth, Telecare and telecommunication products (MY life software and Rompa) and has assisted in the development of industry leading signage for persons living with a dementia.
Paul has now moved into consultancy launching Dementia.REP, an outcome based consultancy and epublishing website seeking to promote biopsychosocial approaches to dementia and dementia caring.
