Benefits for wealthy pensioners in the UK
Do you think wealthy pensioners should receive the non – means tested Government benefits that at present are still available
Should the likes of Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart and members of the Royal family receive fuel allowance payments, free bus passes and a winter fuel allowance ? Mind you I can’t see any of the above mentioned using the bus but you know what I mean !!
Iain Duncan Smith acknowledged pensioners need “a little bit more protection and sensibility” from the state because the elderly do not have the option of working to earn more money.
However, he suggested there are flaws in the welfare system when wealthy pensioners have to be asked to hand back benefits that they do not need. Mr Duncan Smith said he “accepts” this pledge to keep benefits for pensioners this parliament but suggested he did not wholly endorse them.
“The reality is this: the Prime Minister absolutely pledged quite categorically at the last election that he would not be interfering with those benefits, which reassured a lot of pensioners and I think if the Prime Minister gives his word on something like that I’m happy to accept it.”
Asked whether he supports universal benefits for pensioners, he said: “How we give benefits to pensioners is always a matter for debate.”
He added: “My view is pensioners don’t have the one option that people of working age have. They can’t really increase their income, because they are no longer able to work.
“Work is transformative. It gives you a greater chance of a greater income. You can affect your life while you’re of working age, so you have scope and opportunity. Pensioners do not.
“We do need to have a little bit more protection and sensibility around pensioners. They are remarkable. They gave so much. We need to make sure we do our best by them.” Content sourced from the Guardian newspaper
