Don’t let our elderly die of cold!

Winter Deaths are at an all time low,  please help me ensure this continues

I know I  keep sharing this post but that is because I am so passionate to prevent elderly people, unnecessarily, being unwell or dying. I have just received another batch and have stocked up on stamps so please – ” Don’t let our elderly die of cold”.

If you would like to support me in this campaign and feel you could donate some stamps please contact me using the form at the top of the page.

Free Room thermometers available again this year. This is my 5th year of distributing them for Age UK as they do seem to forget to promote them! The thermometer card is found in the middle of the “Winter wrapped up guide” which contains heeps of useful ways to stay warm and well when the weather is cold.

All you need to do to have one sent out is leave me a message at the bottom of this post in the comments box. Your address will not be shared publically.

The thermometer card is found in the middle of the “Winter wrapped up guide” which contains heeps of useful ways to stay warm and well when the weather is cold.

Winter is not everyone’s favourite season and as we age cold weather can become a worry. With ageing, older people’s bodies respond differently to the cold leaving them more vulnerable. People with dementia may also find it harder to recognise how cold their home is too.

A little preparation and following some simple suggestions can help them stay healthy and safe in winter months. Keeping warm both inside and out of the home can help reduce the risk of common health problems for the elderly such as chest infections, heart attack and strokes.
Here is a list of suggestions to help everyone stay warm and well.

  • Have your heating system serviced and if applicable have your chimney swept, if you are in rented accommodation this is your landlords responsibility
  • Check your water stop-cock is working properly
  • Check your electric blanket is working or consider buying one
  • Make sure your smoke alarm is working and consider buying a carbon monoxide monitor in case air vents become blocked
  • Make sure you are claiming all the benefits you are entitled to. Age Uk can help with this
  • Wear plenty of layers. Layers trap the warmth and ensure you have warm shoes or boots with a good grip
  • Keep a mixture of salt and sand handy to put on steps or paths in icy weather. Check to see if your local council offer free bags of this mix.
  • Keep a supply of cold and flu remedies in the home and have your flu jab
  • Order repeat prescriptions in good time if bad weather is forecast, many pharmacies will deliver to your door now
  • Keep your cupboards and freezer stocked.
  • Invest in a hot water bottle

This is a great list of suggestions, Caron – it will definitely help people get through those long, cold winter months! Free thermometers is a fabulous idea too – if only more people knew about it, I will definitely be spreading the word. Good job!

Hi, We are holding a “Stay Well Stay Warm this winter” event on 8th December encouraging our most vulnerable elderly residents to come along for advice on staying safe and well throughout the winter months. The event is free and we will have specialist advice from Energy Efficiency, Trading Standards and many more. We will also be giving out “winter survival goody bags” as well as offering free refreshments including home made soup on the day. Would you be able to supply us with a number of free room thermometers to put into the goody bags. We anticipate around 30-50 people will attend and anything you could let us have would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
