Heatwave

this picture shows a sandcastle with a union Jack in

Not too hot!

Keep the elderly safe in the heatwave

FREE ROOM THERMOMETERS AVAILABLE – keep an eye on the temperature.

Summer has arrived with a fierce heat. Not that I mind, but excess heat can spell trouble for the elderly. The recommended temperature for the main living room is 21C or 70F – my office is 22 degrees in the shade and it is only 9am!

Many a time, I have visited someone elderly in the height of Summer to find their heating on full blast, their homes like a furnace posing the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Hundreds of free room thermometers have been dispatched through Caron Cares again last Winter even though it was incredibly mild again. It was also reported that the  incidents of winter deaths amongst the elderly were down, which is wonderful news

If you would like one for someone elderly or disabled please use the CONTACT tab at the top of this screen remembering to leave ALL your details, including the full postal address you would like it sent to.

There is a limit of one per household and sadly I can only ship to the UK for free but if you are an organisation working with the elderly I am able to provide more.

I am an English expat, currently resident in New Jersey, USA. My mother is in her late 70s and I know she worries about heating bills so doesn’t turn up her heating as much as I think she should. I have recently sent her a heated wrap, but I would greatly appreciate it if you could send her one of the ‘Age’ charity thermometers and another one for her friend if possible?

  13. Hi there,

I teach a group of students on level 2 and 3 apprenticeships in health and social care. We used to have one of these thermometers which we used as a teaching aid for one of our units but it’s had it now. Is there any way you could send one out to us?

    Bekki

    1. Yes of course Bekki. If you message me your address here it is safe. I can also send them out to students who want them and please let them know about the blog and FB community Caron Sprake as both are useful additional learning resources. Thank you. I also make a range of cards, labels and sew on patches for people with dementia and there is a free website where your students can also make them at home. http://www.dementiaassistancecard.com – the future care providers are the secret to good social care as we move forward and the more they know is available to help them and the elderly they care for the better.

      1. Thanks for such wonderful information! I will definitely share that with them in my next sessions.

Can I request a free room thermometer for my mother in law as I think it is far too cold in her home when we visit. We do tell her to turn the heating up but she always says she is warm enough (I don’t think she is, I am sure she is scared of the bill that she might get turning the heating up). I think if she has a themometer we can see that she is warm enough and safe.

    Many thanks
    Mrs Carol Davis

  74. Please can you send me a room thermometer. I want one for my elderly parents. Thankyou in advance
The Knoll, Friars Lane, Lower Brailes, Banbury. OX15 5HU

    1. Yes of course Emma. I will send one out to your parents today. Please sign up for my monthly newsletter so I can let you know of other offers and give-aways.

  75. I have one of these thermometers from my local Age Uk which was for my 90 year old parents. However I was most surprised to find that it is not terribly easy to read being digital, and that for the majority of elderly who will have failing eyesight and lack of mobility enabling them to get close to the thermometer it does need some improvements. As it stands the production of the thermometer in its present form is I consider a waste of money. There is a definite need for a clear easy to read thermometer

    1. Hello Margaret,
Thank you for your comment and observations. I will pass this on to Age UK as obviously no one wants well needed funds to be wasted.
