What is Constipation

What is constipation, is probably not a question many of us ask !

Most if not all of us will have had the occasional bout of constipation and the added discomfort and general millase that it causes.

Constipation in the elderly is common place and they tend to worry about it more than a younger person would.

Our bowel movement habits are all different and vary from twice a day to three times a week.


What is constipation and why does it happen ? 


Food passes through the colon (large intestine) and absorbs water from it whilst forming stools.
The muscle contractions in the colon push the stool toward the rectum.
Constipation occurs when the stools are too hard and dry to move down towards the rectum,

Causes of Constipation

Lack of dietary fibre
Insufficient fluid intake, dehydration
Lack of exercise
Some medications

Solutions to Constipation and  How to avoid it. 

Drink more fluids, water is always best

Eat more fruit and veg if possible. Apricots, prunes and figs are very high in fibre
If at all possible take a little more exercise
If all else fails try a herbal constipation relief such as Senakot . If you still have problems then contact your Doctor.
